Free Tivo and Help me clean my Netflix queue: Poll 3

Anyone reading this live in the Bay Area? If you're a Comcast customer, TiVo is giving away TiVos in exchange for a charity gift donation between 11am and 1pm at their corporate headquarters.


And as previously described, here's the next 90 movies in my queue. Choose one movie from each grouping. If you think a movie is a particular stinker, throw it in the comments. If you don't have an Livejournal account to vote with, throw it in the comments.

You guys are probably getting sick of this, unless you get some voyeuristic pleasure at looking at the kinds of movies I'd rent. You're out of luck there, because Netflix stopped carrying The Erotic Witch Project years ago. Plus, I have internet.

Five songs you should be listening to

ludditerobot took someone else's Favorite Song list, and made a Top Five Songs you want to Pimp right now list, asking "What's yours?"

Here are five songs which have been in my house, work and car players for the past four weeks:

1. "A Masters In Reverse Psychology" - Murder by Death
   sassica basically threw this disc at me, one day. We were at the bar, and she told me I would love this band. With titles like Like the Exorcist but More Breakdancing, "You Are the Last Dragon: You Posses The Power of the Glow," and "Holy Lord, Shawshank Redemption Is Such a Good Movie," how can a pop-culture junkie like me not like them? Murder by Death defies my attempts at description--the closest band I can find to liken them to is VAST, but they're still quite different. "A Masters in Reverse Psychology" comes from their concept album, Who Will Survive, and What Will Be Left of Them?, which tells the story of the Devil laying siege to a small town in Mexico. It even has a song about zombies!
   
2. "Only Got One" - Frou Frou
   Frou Frou is probably best known as the band behind the song "Let Go," which plays in the background of the Garden State trailer. I know of at least five different people who, after watching that preview in the movie theater, frantically rushed about looking for who was responsible for the song. Far from a one-trick pony, Frou Frou has a full album, Details, which is quite good, and "Only Got One" is one of my favorites.
   
3. "Worn Me Down" - Rachael Yamagata
   Loyal The O.C. watchers will probably recognize this one as the song that plays when Seth goes looking for Summer, only to see her having lunch with her dad and new boyfriend. That same frantic seizure which overtook my friends in searching for "Let Go" took a hold of me when I watched the aforementioned scene, and with the help of TiVo and a Google search on "I wish you the best, but I can do without it" brought me this song.
   
4. "The Eternal Vow" (from the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Score) - Tan Dun
   The beginning of this song is probably my favorite part, with the Chinese lute introducing Yo Yo Ma's lyrical cello. The song as a whole is really quite moving. Plus it's easy to get in the mood to practice Tai Chi while listening to it.
   
5. "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" (from the Kill Bill, Volume I Soundtrack) - Santa Esmeralda
   Apart from the cool clapping riff at the beginning, which Tarantino used to great effect during (as far as I can recall) the climax of the swordfight between The Bride and O-Ren Ishii, this song, from the latin guitar touches at the beginning, to its ten-and-a-half-minute length, is, like the soundtrack itself, with its dialogue clips and oddball songs, just plain nifty. Of particular shock is how Tarantino is able to use The Master of the Pan Flute to cool effect.
